Why ADPi: Sydney Magno PC’20

"Alpha Delta Pi’s motto, “We Live for Each Other,” has guided me in becoming a better leader, whether in an ADPi officer position or in any other experiences I have outside of the chapter. I know that whatever I do after graduation, I will always want to continue giving back to my community and making underrepresented voices heard."

Hey y’all, I’m Sydney! I’m about to start my fourth and final year at UCLA as a Public Affairs major (how insanely terrifying and exciting!). I am also the Chapter President here at Alpha Delta Pi, where I’ve gotten to grow so much as a leader. This is my second year serving on this chapter’s Executive Committee, so I can easily attest to how incredible the leadership opportunities are here. Not only do I get to gain some great experience leading this chapter, I also get to give back to the most amazing group of women I’ve ever met.

I first got involved as an officer for ADPi during my first quarter in the chapter (fall 2020). ADPi allows members to start out with a small position, even as a new member! I got started as Operations Specialist, helping run the behind the scenes of day-to-day chapter business. My sophomore year, I became the Vice President of Operations, working at the right hand of our Chapter President and serving on the Executive Committee. Now as Chapter President myself, I get to lead the members of Exec to further our goals as officers and make the chapter the very best it can be. In each of these three positions, I learned so much about what it takes to smoothly run a large organization and how to be a compassionate, confident, and open-minded leader.

ADPi has also improved my skills and confidence in communicating and public speaking. Through recruitment conversations, leading chapter meetings, and facilitating Executive Committee and Executive Board meetings, I have only continued to grow my confidence and belief that my opinions and words have value. This has been so important to me because I want people to trust me to advocate on their behalf in a future career in politics or advocacy, which can only happen if I have faith in myself.

I’ve chosen time and time again to be a leader in ADPi because I want to give back to the chapter that has given me so much throughout my UCLA experience. I love to continue shaping and growing ADPi while also creating the same experiences for other members of my chapter that I’ve been so fortunate to have.

Alpha Delta Pi’s motto, “We Live for Each Other,” has guided me in becoming a better leader, whether in an ADPi officer position or in any other experiences I have outside of the chapter. I know that whatever I do after graduation, I will always want to continue giving back to my community and making underrepresented voices heard. I will continue to live not only for my sisters, but for all of those I serve, and I know that my future career will be greatly impacted by my time and leadership experience in Alpha Delta Pi.

For those considering joining a Panhellenic chapter, rest assured there are so many ways to get involved in helping your sorority. Joining ADPi provides endless opportunities for leadership development and personal growth. I hope you can find an experience at UCLA that is as fulfilling as mine has been.
