Recruitment Advice: Ella Shaw PC '23

"Joining a sorority is not just about the letters you wear, it is also about the wisdom you gain and the friendships you make that will last a lifetime."

Hey there!

My name is Ella and I am a rising second-year Biochemistry major at UCLA. I also happen to be the Community Service Specialist for Alpha Delta Pi, where I get to coordinate volunteer opportunities for our girls usually revolving around the Ronald McDonald House Charities, which is our national philanthropy. Joining Alpha Delta Pi has been one of the greatest decisions I’ve ever made, but I’ll admit navigating the recruitment process can be pretty intimidating especially if you are like me, who came in knowing nothing. I wanted to offer some tips and tricks of some things I wish I knew as a PNM for everyone who is rushing this year!

Tip #1 - Do your research! On the first two days of formal recruitment, which is called Open House, you are given the opportunity to get a glimpse into each of the chapters that UCLA has to offer. However, I found it helpful to look at UCLA Panhellenic’s website, where you can learn more about each houses’ passions, values, and philanthropies. That is where I learned more about our philanthropy, and how it tied into my own personal values.

Tip #2 - Don’t be afraid to talk to your Rho Gammas! During recruitment, you will be placed in a Rho Gamma group, where one or two girls are active members of sororities who temporarily step down to help all PNMS by leading them through formal recruitment and providing them with an unbiased recruitment experience. I still remember my Rho Gamma and how she helped me during the duration of my rush. She gave me support when I was feeling discouraged and continued to motivate me to give it my all!

Tip #3 - Be unapologetically yourself. Joining a sorority is not just about the letters you wear, it is also about the wisdom you gain and the friendships you make that will last a lifetime. I chose Alpha Delta Pi because I found girls there who celebrated and appreciated me for who I am, and I encourage you all to do the same.
