"From an all girls high school to a loving sisterhood within ADPi, the concept of strong women is not foreign to me, and this summer I chose to delve deeper into it."
Buen día!! Que tal?
My name is Ava Abrishamchian, and I’m a Delta at ADPi. I hope everyone’s summer has been going well. If there’s one thing I love about summer it’s the stories people bring to their new destinations for the season, and even more, the stories they bring back home after their adventures.
For me, I am currently in Argentina working abroad with UCLA Study Abroad. I work for a cooperative business called Matriarca that is 100% women and indigenous owned. Matriarca is dedicated to the mission of preserving and expanding indigenous Argentinian culture throughout Latin America and the world, as well as strengthening the independent and artistic nature of indigenous women. From an all girls high school to a loving sisterhood within ADPi, the concept of strong women is not foreign to me, and this summer I chose to delve deeper into it.
I focus on the marketing side of things, working with consulting firms to create global campaigns, managing their online presence, and cataloging on their online storefronts. Not only have I learned so much about the business side of the world, but I have had the opportunity to explore the Wichi, Qomle’ec, and Pilaga communities of Argentina. With incredible artisans who have such an entrepreneurial spirit, I have witnessed firsthand how culture and politics intersect with economic and societal customs.
Not only have I had an amazing working experience, I have the opportunity to fully immerse myself in such a fascinating culture: drinking mate, learning Spanish, and traveling around Latin America. Last weekend, my friends and I traveled to the Iguazu Falls in Brazil and Argentina, one of the many wonders of the world. And, in a few weeks, we will be exploring the Patagonia region of Argentina and Chile.
While my time in Argentina is coming to an end, I have created such enriching experiences with my coworkers, roommates, and even my favorite barista at my go-to coffee shop. I am excited to return home with beautiful memories to tell my sisters at ADPi! With such a diverse group of girls, there are so many interesting stories to go around. As fall approaches, I am so excited to sit in the common room with people I call a second family sharing, laughing, and commemorating the summer season.
